Create a Cartoon Monster Character in Photoshop

Learn how to create a Fun Cartoon Monster in Adobe Photoshop!

Open up a new file, make it 600×800 pixels.

Make 4 new layers and call them Horns, Mouth, Spots and Eyes. These will help to categorize each part of the design and make it easier to edit if need be. With the pen tool, create a body shape.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Right click on the body layer and go into Layer Style. Select the gradient box, then go into Color Overlay. Change the color to #eaff03. Make the opacity 82%.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Make the color #49331a then with the pen tool draw 2 horns on the top of the head.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Select the color #59452f and with the pen tool draw a smaller horn shape over the horns.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

With the pen tool make a mouth shape. Right click on mouth layer> Select Gradient>Select Color Overlay>Make the color #070707 and opacity 93%.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

With the pen tool draw a tongue shape in the mouth. Right click the layer > Select Gradient > Go to Color Overlay and make the color #e30c0c and the opacity %83.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Make the color #000000 (black) with the pen tool draw a slit on the top of the tongue. Ontop of the layer box make the opacity for that layer 82%.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Using the pen tool create some gums on the top of the mouth. Right Click the layer and go to Layer Style > Select gradient> Go into Color Overlay> Make the Color #ff0736 and the Opacity 77%.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

With the pen tool make some crooked, ugly teeth! (Make sure the teeth layer is put under the gums layer). Right Click the teeth layer > Go to Layer Style > Select Gradient > Go to Color Overlay > Choose the color #d3d3d3 and make the Opacity 77%.

REMEMBER: Put the layer you create into the right folder name. It will save you lots of time if you need to go back and change anything.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Select the Circle shape and make the color white (#FFFFFF), while holding down the shift key create 2 eye circles.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Holding down the ctrl key and click on the small box icon on the eye layer, this will have the eye shape selected. Click on the "Elliptical Marquee Tool'. While holding down the Alt key select over the eye shape to make a quarter moon shape.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Make a new layer (make sure it's above the eye shape layer), select the color #e9e9e9 > choose the Paint bucket tool and fill in the moon shape. Do that same process with the other eye.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

With the circle shape tool make two smaller circles in the middle of the two eyes. Right click one of the layers > Go to Layer Style >Go to Gradient Overlay > Make the style Radius > Click on the Gradient color and make the left color: #afdefb and right color: #10beff.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

After you have colored the eyes make 2 smaller black cirlces in the middle of the eyes. Make a new layer, select a brush with soft round edges, make the color white and put in the small white circles.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We're nearly there! Now it's time to make the spots and shadows. Select the pen tool create shadows and with the colors #ffffff and #000000. Make the opacity on colors 9% on the black layers and 25% on the white layers so it blends in well with the body.
